By Venadita as told to Sarah Anne Kulla
It was so cold and the dry thin air blowing over the dusty cement was my only reality. I saw humans passing by, most of them never looked at me twice. In fact, I think I had known very few moments of true kindness in the eight months or so since I had been pushed into this world. Don’t worry though, this is not a sad story. I went from the street, to the throne, on Christmas Eve of 2016.
I went from the street, to the throne, on Christmas Eve of 2016
I had seen the couple before: a tall, awkward, laughing blonde lady and a tattooed muscular skater-type guy at her side. They had stopped to say hi to me in cute voices, and petted me a little bit, but I couldn’t reciprocate much since I didn’t have any energy. I just lay flat on my side like a pancake and wagged my tail a bit. I was so tired. I was so thin, the wind would have blown me over.
It was the second or third time that they passed by, and the Christmas lights were twinkling down Arbol Grande street in Salamanca. I heard their conversation through the brain fog veil of my malnourishment. Their voices floated over me and I half listened without knowing who spoke.
“She is so cute. Omg, look at her. We have to take her home. It’s Christmas Eve!”
“We have to save her– we can help her get healthy and find her a permanent home. Can she walk?”
“Let’s see if she lets us carry her!”
Suddenly I was being lifted by strong arms and I was scared but had little energy. I didn’t know if they would be kind to me, but I couldn’t struggle so I drooped my limp body into their hugging arms and whimpered a little. The tattooed human carried me and the awkward blonde had a huge, blue plastic water bottle that she struggled to haul down the block. I closed my eyes and hoped for the best.
That was more than seven years ago now. When my humans got to know me, my gentle nature, my sweet loving eyes…their home became my forever home.
I am a little fat now and my golden fur is shiny. I love to get treats and I can do a few tricks! They call me Venadita, Little Deer, for my sweet, docile nature and doe eyes. When my humans hug me, I lean in and hug them back, with all my heart.
So you see, I am a chunky princess now, and life is good!
