117 animals were sterilized at two campaigns in July

Our sterilization team sterilized 117 dogs and cats at two campaigns in July. They took place in the Guanajuato suburb of San José de Cervera on July 2 (41 animals) and in the village of Santa Terresa on July 23 (76 animals).

In San José de Cervera we planned to use the community center where we have held previous campaigns, but when our team arrived to set up the equipment, they learned that the building was not available because city workers would be painting the benches and making other improvements in the little park surrounding the center that day. The mayor and other officials were on hand for a photo op to publicize the project.

We moved the campaign into a nearby storefront whose owner made it available to us. Next to the store was an open area, where our team set up a tarp to protect the pets and their owners from the hot sun while waiting their turn. Nevertheless, some people who brought their pets to the campaign left when they realized it would not be held in the community center. Instead of our usual 70–80 cases, we sterilized only 41 animals that day: 17 female dogs, 4 male dogs, 13 female cats, and 7 male cats.

At the community center in the village of Santa Teresa, a regular site for our campaigns, we sterilized 76 animals: 32 female dogs, 6 male dogs, 25 female cats, and 13 male cats. Everything went smoothly, and we received help from several new volunteers.

In Santa Teresa, Azul Peña Zamarripa hand-washed used surgical drapes, which were later machine-washed and sterilized in an autoclave

Our campaign participants during the month were veterinarians Veronica Almaguer, Ricardo Montes de Oca, and Arturo Rocha; Julia Salido, campaign coordinator; Karla Ahumada and Abril Herrera, advanced veterinary students; and Kathya Amaya, Sandra Alicia Barajas, Mary Beth Canavan, Cristian Salvador Campos, Rosemary Conde, Carlos Donato, Miriam Gallardo García, Karina Hernández Ramírez, Debora Keller, Victoria Larrazolo, Antonia López, Ana Elizabeth García Huerta, Guadalupe Loza, Beth Lozano, Vero Mares, Adhán Albero Mata López, Azul Itzel Peña Zamarripa, Derek Alexander Rosas, Dulce Sandoval, and Virginia Sandoval Anguiano.  We are grateful to all of them.
