Our sterilization campaigns in May

Amigos conducted two campaigns in May, sterilizing a total of 110 animals. The first campaign, on May 7, took place at Resplandor International, the community center in the village of Cajones. The second, on May 20, was held in the community center of Santa Teresa. The two campaigns brought our total of sterilized cases so far this year to 596.

Resplandor International is a nonprofit cultural center whose resources serve people living in the ten or so villages near Cajones. On May 7 we sterilized 35 animals here: 27 female dogs, 5 female cats, and 3 male cats. The large room on the ground floor of this center is an ideal venue for our campaigns, as it can easily accommodate every step of the sterilization process, from registration to recovery.

The city government’s community center in Santa Teresa is also well set up to handle our campaigns, and we’ve held five campaigns there over the past three years. On May 20 our vets and advanced student vets sterilized 75 animals: 43 female dogs, 10 male dogs, 16 female cats, and 6 male cats.

One of our education team members usually spends time talking with children who attend the campaigns with their parents. She tells them about how to care for their pets for the first week or so after they return home, what their pets’ daily needs are, and how to behave with them. But no children turned up at either of our May campaigns.

Our thanks to our campaign coordinator, Julia Salido; the veterinarians Verónica Almaguer, Ricardo Montes de Oca, and Arturo Rocha; veterinary students Karla Ahumada and Carlos Donato; and support volunteers Rosemarie Conde, María Guadalupe, Cecilia Ivarra, Adhan Mata López, Tony López, Vero Mares, Juana Mondragón, Daniel Pérez, Juana Elizabeth Reyes Martínez, Omar Salazar Gutiérrez, Dulce Sandoval, Vicky Sandoval, and Sandra Velázquez. We also thank Resplandor International for hosting the campaign in Cajones and the people in both communities who supported the campaigns with their contributions of food for the volunteers and donations to help us offset our expenses.
